چکیده

The extent of damage to the blood-retinal barrier, induced by cryoapplication on the sclera, was measured in adult pigmented rabbits by using a vitreous fluorophotometer. In eight isolated cryopexies. the intensity of each was equalized by stopping freez.ing exactly when a white spot started to appear in the fundus. and the blood-retinal barrier damage was repaired 7-10 days after the operation. On the other hand, in the eyes treated with double cryoapplication refreezing being initiated just after the initial ice ball in the fundus disappeared, fluorescein concentration was reduced below the control value in 3-5 days but histopathological reparation of the retinal pigment epithelium was incomplete in these cases. The eyes treated with 20 scattered applications showed more profuse leaking of the fluorescein dye and required 35-42 days before the concentration of fluorescein was reduced below the control value; however, when the leaking ceased, the regenerated retinal pigment epithelium covered the Bruch's membrane. The above findings indicate that to prevent protraction of blood-retinal barrier damage associated with the retinal pigment epithelium, cryoretinopexy twice or more to the same area or extremely extensive cryoapplications at one time are prohibitive.

Estimation of the permeability of the blood-retinal barrier in normal individuals.

The fluorescein kinetics in the vitreous was simulated with a computer to consider several factors such as permeability of the blood-retinal barrier, outward active transport, plasma fluorescein dynamics, diffusion of fluorescein in the vitreous, and fluorescein leakage from the blood-aqueous barrier. Kinetic vitreous fluorophotometry was performed in normal individuals to estimate the inward a...

Vitreous fluorophotometry evaluation of xenon photocoagulation.

An abnormal increase in the permeability of the outer blood-retinal barrier was induced in the eyes of adult pigmented rabbits after retinal xenon arc photocoagulation. The alteration of the blood-retinal barrier, which was assessed by vitreous fluorophotometry after systemic administration of sodium fluorescein, followed a well-defined pattern. Higher values, which were recorded during the fir...

Pharmacokinetics of fluorescein in the vitreous.

The pharmacokinetics of fluorescein in the vitreous after intravenous or oral fluorescein administration was studied in normal individuals. Vitreous and free blood fluorescein concentrations were measured over an 8 hr period by fluorophotometry and fluorescence polarization. A computer model was constructed based on the free plasma fluorescein concentrations and conformed closely to the experim...

Pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy.

After a brief analysis of the pathological picture of diabetic retinopathy, of which only the topographical distribution of the vascular lesions appears to be specific, the results obtained with 2 new methods of study of the retinal circulation, are presented. These methods are vitreous fluorophotometry and fluorometric determination of segmental retinal blood flow. Vitreous fluorophotometry ha...

Blood-ocular barrier permeability in monkeys.

The permeability of the blood-ocular barrier was investigated in five monkeys using vitreous fluorophotometry (VFP). Inward permeability (Pin) of the blood-retinal barrier was calculated by a computer simulation method. Kinetic VFP was performed after intravitreal injection of fluorescein (F) or fluorescein monoglucuronide (FG). The estimated mean value of Pin (x10(-6) cm/min) was 4.8 (SD 1.2)....
